Scout sobs, sucking on his cigarette like a pacifier. It's burning quickly from all the sucking, and he coughs, brown phlegm flecking the ground.

"Sooooo why're you here now?" Gavroche pretends his friend isn't struggling to keep himself together. He doesn't mind being the primary voice of the group, between the mute Stab and the weeping Scout. And he understands a little boy's need for dignity when they cry. "If you didn't want to be a dad then, I mean. Whoever knocked up Mom, I don't think he'd come around to pick me up."

Gavroche shrugs, taking a puff of his cigarette. Where the lack of father left a yawning void in Pyrrhus' life, it left little to no hole in Gavroche's. Or, perhaps, he didn't have a chance to grow up enough to see it had.

"Don't think I'd want him to come, neither. 'Specially if he thought he could act like a dad and boss me around. Only grownups who've been there get to boss me around."
