"They like to keep humans as pets. Chop off your thumbs and toes so you can't ever escape!" Gavroche says, holding up his hands like claws, like a child telling a ghost story at a fire.
"And normal people don't want to let any of us into their groups, because we're creepy," Scout says. He picks up a stick from the ground, absently making shapeless scribbles on the dirt. "There are other groups of people like us, but they're a lot meaner. Not much safer than the fairies."
"They act like we're still at war." Gavroche lets his hands drop and rolls his eyes. "Lots of shooting each other. What's the point if everyone comes back 'cuz we're already dead? It's dumb." No, no, in Gavroche's opinion, Mama Ember is the bestest leader they could ask for, and this is the best group, and anyone who doesn't think so is dumb.
